Berta Rojas, extraordinary classical guitarist from Paraguay was born in Asuncion, Paraguay, September 23. She started to play guitar at the age of 7 on an instrument handed from her older brother who also played the guitar. Her first guitar teacher was Felipe Sosa.
She attended the Escuela Universitaria de Musica in Uruguay, where she studied under Eduardo Fernández, Mario Paysee, and Abel Carlevaro privately. At the Peabody Conservatorium in Baltimore she obtained a master’s degree in music under the tutelage of Manuel Barrueco and Ray Chester. Finally she obtained a Graduate Performance Diploma for which she studied under Barrueco and Julian Gray.
Today Berta Rojas ranks among today’s most important names in classical guitar world and holds a Master's Degree in Music from Baltimore's prestigious Peabody Conservatory. She's also a professor of guitar at George Washington University and the Washington Conservatory of Music both in Washington DC where she enjoy teaching young children. Berta said about teaching them:

"Children are funny; they love the guitar. Sometimes we don’t even play a note, we listen to music and we talk about it. It is a different kind of relationship, not 100 percent career-oriented but one I treasure and one that keeps me alive."

Berta Rojas serves as the Ambassador of Tourism for her country Paraguay. She found music as a passport to international recognition of her country.

Berta's biggest inspiration is naturally her fellow-countryman Agustín Barrios Mangoré, a true master of the guitar and one of the greatest composers of guitar music of all time.
In 2009 Berta created the first online classical guitar competition, the Barrios WorldWideWeb Competition.
Competition is open to young people from all over the world between the ages of 18 and 30. They can register online and upload their videos to YouTube. Winners can compete for important prizes in a final round which takes place in Paraguay, the land of Agustin Barrios’ birth.

Berta was also artistic director of the Ibero-American Guitar Festival and co-founded the young persons’ Beatty Music Scholarship Competition for Classical Guitar whose winners perform at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington DC.

Berta Rojas has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center in New York and many other prestigious venues all over the world. Besides giving countless recitals, Berta is also committed to supporting South American artists, kids and the music from this region of the world, especially music of Paraguayan composer Agustín Barrios Mangoré.
