Invented in 1931, the electric guitar became a necessity for jazz musicians to amplify their sound. Since then, the electric guitar has become the most important instrument in popular and rock music. From the second half of XX century 2 companies dominate in electric guitars and amplifiers manufacturing. Fender produced the Stratocaster® in 1954 which became very popular, used by such musicians as Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Johnson, Stevie Ray Vaughan and many others. Gibson® with their Les Paul Signature became same popular and used by musicians like Jimmy Page, Pete Townshend, Joe Perry, Slash and Zakk Wylde. Electric guitars are famous for their sound to be altered by effects pedals, processors, rack units, etc. and of course, their amplified sound.
