The sixth song "Ellens Gesang III" (Hymn to the Virgin)was written by Franz Schubert in1825 as one of seven songs form cycle published in 1826 as his Opus 52 to lyrics from Walter Scott's popular epic poem The Lady of the Lake, translated into German by Adam Storck. Schubert called his piece "Ellens dritter Gesang" (Ellen's third song) and it was written as a prayer to the Virgin Mary from a frightened girl, Ellen Douglas, who had been forced into hiding.
The song has become one of Schubert's most popular works, recorded by a wide variety of singers, under the title of "Ave Maria". In Since 1846 Franz Liszt arranged three versions of "Ave Maria" for piano.
