Later Steve took lessons from classical/jazz/country player Jimmy Wyble. In 1976 when he was nineteen he joined his schoolfriends keyboardist David Paich and drummer Jeff Porcaro who was playing drums with Steely Dan to form Toto band.
Steve's unique guitar sound and skills quickly landed him session work with Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Don Henley, among others.
Lukather subsequently balanced session and solo work with his continuing commitments to Toto;
The year 1982 was most successful (commercially) in Toto's and Lukather's career. Lukather and Toto contributed heavily to Michael Jackson's Thriller album, the album Toto IV went platinum and the singles Rosanna and Africa became all time classics.
After touring with Jeff Beck, Simon Phillips and Carlos Santana in Japan, Lukather released in 1989 his first solo album Lukather which saw him joined by a whole host of guest players, including fellow guitar maestros Eddie Van Halen and Steve Stevens, Richard Marx on vocals and Jan Hammer on keyboards.
In 2001 Lukather and fellow guitar virtuoso Larry Carlton released a selection of songs recorded in the Blue Note in Osaka, in November 1998, on their live album No substitutions, which won Grammy in category 11 Best Pop Instrumental Album for solo artists, duos or groups.
