"Ain't No Sunshine" was first hit by Bill Withers, first released as the B-side to another song called "Harlem." and soon after on his 1971 album Just As I Am, produced by Booker T. Jones.
The song won the Grammy for Best R&B Song in 1972.
Wither wrote this song inspired by the movie "Days Of Wine And Roses" (1962) with Lee Remick and Jack Lemmon. Withers said: "They were both alcoholics who were alternately weak and strong. It's like going back for seconds on rat poison. Sometimes you miss things that weren't particularly good for you. t's just something that crossed my mind from watching that movie, and probably something else that happened in my life that I'm not aware of."
Withers' version of the song did not chart at first, but Michael Jackson's cover hit #8 of UK charts in 1972. Later many other covers appeared by such musicians as Paul McCartney, Isaac Hayes, Lionel Hampton, Prince, Sting, Kenny Rogers, Tom Jones.
Backingtrack available is slow in smooth jazz style, perfect to record some inspiring guitar improvisation.
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
It's not warm when she's away
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And she's always gone too long
Anytime she goes away
Wonder this time where she's gone
Wonder if she's gone to stay
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home
Anytime she goes away
And I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know,
Hey, I oughtta leave young thing alone
But ain't no sunshine when she's gone
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
Only darkness every day
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home
Anytime she goes away
Anytime she goes away
Anytime she goes away
Anytime she goes away
