This is our tribute to Influential Brazilian musician João Gilberto, 'bossa nova style legend', who has died aged 88, July 6, 2019 at his home in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Gilberto began singing at his 18. In his early years Mr. Gilberto had a strong, romantic voice, in the popular samba-canção crooning style. in 1957 he was introduced to Antônio Carlos Jobim and soon became the principal voice of the best known Brazilian style in the world, Bossa Nova, which gained particular popularity in the United States in the 1960s. This brought Mr. Gilberto to Carnegie Hall and led to a Grammy Award, given to him and the jazz saxophonist Stan Getz, for a collaborative effort that was named album of the year for 1964 and that produced an enormous hit, “The Girl From Ipanema.” For the past decade, João Gilberto lived alone in Rio, struggling with mental health and financial issues.
Gilberto’s daughter, Bebel Gilberto a singer, commemorated her father on Facebook. “How much fun we had! Thank you for everything … the attention to every little harmony and melody in any song, to leave the moment in life, to be kind to be honest, to be a family man, to be the GREATEST Dad anyone could ever dreamed of,” she wrote.

"For the past decade lived alone in Rio, struggling with mental health and financial issues"
Then his daughter writes: "GREATEST Dad anyone could ever dreamed of"
Wonder where she was when her GREATEST Dad was dying....
