After long illness iconic jazz guitarist Pat Martino passed away November 1st at age 77 in Philadelphia, at the same house where he had spent part of his childhood.
By the age of 35 Pat Martino was already considered one of jazz music’s finest guitarists. He had developed a sleek and fluid style modeled after guitarist Wes Montgomery.
In 1980 Martino suffered a near-fatal brain aneurysm. Surgeons removed a blood clot as well as a portion of his left temporal lobe. After surgery Martino barely recognized his parents and had no memory of his name. While listening to records and hearing friends play the guitar, he slowly began to play again, leading to an astonishing second act of his career until a lung condition forced him to retire in 2018.
