Lyle Mays, legendary keyboardist of Pat Metheny's group has died at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 66, February 11, 2020.
Pat Metheny wrote on his website: “Lyle was one of the greatest musicians I have ever known, Across more than 30 years, every moment we shared in music was special."

Lyle Mays and Pat Metheny first met at a jazz festival in Wichita, Kansas, during 1974. Several years later they regularly began performing and recording together, starting with Metheny’s 1977 album Watercolors. From this moment Mays became Pat Metheny Group member where he was a performer, composer and arranger, co-writing much of the band’s material and blending acoustic piano with an array of synthesizers,
With the Metheny's Group he won numerous jazz performance Grammys. He was also a sideman for albums by jazz, rock and pop artists, including Joni Mitchell, Rickie Lee Jones and the group Earth, Wind & Fire.
Recently Mays quietly lived out the rest of his days in California, working in the computer industry.

“Lyle was a brilliant musician and person, and a genius in every sense of the word,” said his niece, composer-vocalist Aubrey Johnson.
