"Satin Doll" is one of most popular standards in jazz history. Written by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn with lyrics by Johnny Mercer in 1953 the song has been recorded by such jazz artists as Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner, Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery and many more. "Satin Doll" was recorded on April 6, 1953 during Ellington's first session for Capital Records, since he left Columbia Records early in 1953. Originally this was Ellington who wrote the melody for “Satin Doll". Strayhorn was responsible for its harmonization. One story is that that the song was titled “Satin Doll," after Strayhorn’s pet name for his mother. Other version of the story is that Satin Doll was written for Evie Ellington, Duke’s common-law wife.
