A song written by Don McLean after reading a book about the life of Van Gogh in 1971 and is a reference to Van Gogh's 1889 painting The Starry Night. There is a time capsule in the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam that contains the sheet music to this song along with some of the artist's brushes. This song is often played at the museum. In July 2020, the original handwritten lyrics went up for sale for $1.5 million.
