The song was written by Don McLean in tribute to Vincent van Gogh and refers to Van Gogh's painting The Starry Night. McLean wrote the lyrics in 1971 after reading Van Gogh's biography. The following year, "Vincent" song became the number one hit in the U.K. and No. 12 in the U.S.
