Guthrie Govan (born 27 December 1971 in Chelmsford, Essex, England) is one of the most exciting new guitar virtuoso who moves easily between variety of musical genres and styles.
Govan began playing guitar early, aged only three, encouraged by his father. He attended King Edward VI Grammar School in Chelmsford and started read English at the University of Oxford. He left Oxford after a year to pursue a career in music.
In 1993 he won Guitarist magazine’s "Guitarist of the Year" competition with his instrumental piece ‘Wonderful Slippery Thing’. He submitted a sample transcription (of a Shawn Lane piece) to Guitar Techniques magazine and this earned him a job as a contributor to the magazine.
Guthrie has also worked as a guitar instructor at various institutions. He has published two books on guitar playing: Creative Guitar Volume 1: Cutting Edge Techniques and Creative Guitar Volume 2: Advanced Techniques.

He played with Asia on their 2001 album Aura, as well as the tour that followed its release. He formed GPS with John Payne and Jay Schellen. He's also played with the British electronic group The Young Punx and is a member of a jazz-fusion band called The Fellowship.
