After playing under various names in Jacksonville, the group settled on Lynyrd Skynyrd and brought the group to prominence during the Southern rock boom of the 1970s. Their 1973 first album, "Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd" was an immediate sensation. Songs "Free Bird,” a tribute to the late Duane Allman and “Sweet Home Alabama" became hits.Skynyrd’s success was increasing but in 1977 a plane carrying the band crashed in Gillsburg, Mississippi, killing singer Van Zant and guitarist Gaines and the group disbanded. In 1987 surviving members reunited In 2006 Lynyrd Skynyrd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
