Matt Palmer has gained worldwide recognition as a virtuosic and soulful concert artist. His road to classical guitar was pretty unusual.
Matt received his first guitar when he was about 10 years old. This was the time when Guns N’ Roses exploded, and Matt was really inspired by Slash.
Soon he moved on to the neoclassical shred deities of the period generous inspired by Yngwie Malmsteen and Marty Friedman.
Also Randy Rhoads was his big influences all through high school. He played everything off the [Ozzy Osbourne] Tribute album, and from there I progressed into really heavy stuff, thrashing riffs of Slayer’s Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, as well as Pantera’s Dimebag Darrell.
When Matt was 16, his mother gave him a gift - CD by classical guitar maestro, Christopher Parkening. Though he dismissed the gift at the time, few years later during his freshman year of college, he attended some classical guitar concerts. This blew him away in the same way Slash had in his youth and Matt decided to focus on classical guitar.
Soon Palmer recorded his debut album, "Un tiempo fue Ital’ca famosa: (which is named after the Joaquin Rodrigo composition it begins with.)
Since 2000 Matt Palmer has won several guitar competitions including:
- Beethoven Club Guitar Competition (2000)
- MANC Competition 2005
- ASU Concerto-Aria Competition (2005)
- Columbus State Guitar Symposium & Competition (2006)
- Beeston Memorial Competition (2007, 2008)
- Sholin Memorial Competition (2007, 2008)
He also won 2nd prize in Appalachian Guitarfest Competition twice and was the finalist of prestigious 15th Internationales Pfingstseminar in Koblenz, 2007.
Matt has released total 3 CDs as classical guitarist. He's also an author of "THE VIRTUOSO GUITARIST, VOLUME 1" instructional book, in-depth guide to approach to playing fast scales on the guitar.
