Jaco Pastorius (real name John Francis Anthony Pastorius III, December 1, 1951 – September 21, 1987) was an American virtuoso electric bass player. Originally a drummer, following in the footsteps of his father, stand-up drummer Jack Pastorius, “Jaco” switched to bass at age 15.

Everything started to come together for him quickly once he started playing with another jazz guitar viruoso Pat Metheny, around 1974. By 1976, he had been invited to join Weather Report, where he remained until 1981. Outside Weather Report, he found himself in constant demand as a sessionman and producer, playing on Joni Mitchell, Blood Sweat and Tears, Paul Bley, Bireli Lagrene and Ira Sullivan albums. From 1980 to 1984, he toured and recorded with his own band, the innovative Word of Mouth that fluctuated in size from a large combo to a big band.

Pastorius was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1988, one of only four bassists to be so honored. He is regarded as one of the most influential bass players of all time.
