Herb Ellis
Legendary jazz guitarist Mitchell Herbert "Herb" Ellis, was born in August 4, 1921 in Farmersville, Texas. Ellis was forced to drop out of college due to a lack of funds and he went on the road as the guitar player with a college band. Later Ellis attended North Texas State University from 1941-43 where his classmates included Jimmy Giuffre, Gene Roland, and Harry Babasin. He has worked with such groups as the Casa Loma Orchestra, Jimmy Dorsey, the Soft Winds Trio and The Great Guitars (with Joe Pass, Charlie Byrd, and Barney Kessel).
Ellis became prominent after performing with the Oscar Peterson Trio from 1953 to 1958 along with pianist Peterson and bassist Ray Brown.
Like almost every guitarist who came up after 1940, Herb Ellis was influenced by Charlie Christian and even if certainly he established his own voice and style of jazz guitar, he has never strayed far from the voice of Charlie Christian.

Herb Ellis died of Alzheimer's disease at his Los Angeles home on the morning of March 28, 2010, at the age of 88.
