Legendary guitar duel from the 1986 "Crossroads" movie. Steve Vai plays against Ralph Macchio.
In fact this is Ry Cooder who plays Macchio's guitar parts throughout the movie.
Macchio didn't know how to play guitar prior to taking on the part of a guitarist. He received intensive training from classical guitarist William Kanengiser of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and from blues guitar vituoso Arlen Roth to approximate playing realistically enough to hide his inexperience.
Inspired by the legend of blues musician Robert Johnson, Corossroads movie was was written by John Fusco and directed by Walter Hill. The original soundtrack features music performed by Ry Cooder and Steve Vai on the guitar, and Sonny Terry on harmonica.
After almost 30 years "Crossroads" movie is still popular DVD library position.

As Arlen Roth stated, he was teaching Ralph Macchio at his home in Long Island 4 days a week, 2 hours a day. He taught him electric and acoustic blues, fingerpicking, slide guitar, and even classical guitar. It took 2 months to teach Ralph to 'fake' guitar playing. In the movie this was Arlen Roth, Ry Cooder and Steve Vai who played guitar parts.

Ry Cooder, the film's musical director told "I was the man" to teach him, and to create the parts he would "mime" to throughout much of the film.
In fact Macchio's guitar parts were played by Ry Cooder, Arlen Roth and Steve Vai (classical stuff)

I have watched this movie many years ago, and I didn't even know Steve Vai name then. Of course now I know who's Steve. I also fell in love with the blues then!

I had just begun to place Via in my vocabulary back then... you could tell he had the chops with David Lee Roth and as the replacement for Malmsteen in Alcatraz... who foresee Passion and Warfare even after the Zappa years! Anyway, this video is great and I still feel compassion for the loser more so than the winner.
