He started professional career in a band named Arthurs Museum. By the age of 19 Kotzen was discovered by Shrapnel Records' Mike Varney, and he recorded his first solo album. From 1991 he joined metal groupo Poison, replaceing C.C. DeVille. He recorded 1993's Native Tongue with the group and left the band to return to his solo career.
He collaborated with fellow guitar hero Greg Howe, worked with Mr. Big, and the fusion group VertĂș.
In 2002 Kotzen bought a commercial building in Los Angeles and established a recording Studio/Production company. Since then he has been producing acclaimed solo albums and collaborating with various figures in rock, jazz, and fusion including jazz legendary bassis Stanley Clarke.
