Popa Chubby (born Ted Horowitz March 31, 1960 in the Bronx, NY), grew up in a home filled with music - Illinois Jacquet allegedly played at his parents' wedding. His father, who worked at a small candy store in the Bronx, took his son to see Chuck Berry when he was six years. Popa took up the guitar when he discovered the music of the Rolling Stones. He also mention Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton as his main influences, although in his early twenties he mainly played blues music and worked as backing for punk rock poet Richard Hell.
Popa Chubby and his band came to light in the mid-90s after serving a long apprenticeship at New York's famed blues club, Manny's Carwash. He won the New Artist of the Year award and opened at the Long Beach Blues Festival in 1992. Chubby has continued to play more than 200 club dates a year through the 1990s.
Chubby released several albums on his own Laughing Bear label, Lightyear Records and Blind Pig label. Troubled by the war in Iraq, Chubby released his most political album, Peace, Love and Respect, in 2004. Electric Chubbyland, a two-disc set of Chubby covering Jimi Hendrix songs, appeared from Dixie Frog in 2006.
Popa Chubby tours extensively, often with bass player A.J. Pappas and drummer Tom Papdatos.
