Philip Catherine ws born 27 October 1942 in London to English mother and Belgian father. Growing up in a musical family (his father was first violin with the London Symphony Orchestra) Philip developed a musical ear from an early age. He took up the guitar after having discovered Gypsy genius Django Reinhardt, and started listening to all the great jazzmen of the period.
As very youmg musicians, at the age of 18 he toured Europe with Lou Bennett. In 1971 French jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty asked him to join his quintet. Following succesfull tours he played with other jazz great Larry Coryell, Alphonse Mouzon and Zbigniew Seifert. In 1976 when Jan Akkerman suddenly left the Dutch rock band Focus, Catherine replaced him, winning considerable praise for his lyrical playing.

Philip has played in the most prestigious concert halls, from the Berlin Philharmonic to the Carnegie Hall and the Olympia in Paris. Still he loves to play in small jazz clubs from time to time, much appreciated by any kind of public, from jazz fans, the young "rockers" to the more classical public.
