Pepe Habichuela belongs to one of the great flamenco dynasties, the Habichuelas, and to the generation of Paco de Lucía, Camarón de la Isla, Enrique Morente, Manolo Sanlúcar flamenco guitarists.
Pepe Habichuela's grandfather, José Habichuela, and father, Juan Carmona Habichuela, played the guitar and all his brothers are professional players. His nephews are the Carmona brothers, founders of Ketama.

He took his first professional steps in the Sacromonte caves (in Granada) and he then moved on to the Madrid tablaos. At that time he accompanied Pepe Marchena and Juanito Valderrama. However, his close cooperation with Enrique Morente in the seventies marked a change in direction for his career.

He has also gone beyond traditional Flamenco guitar by adding bass, percussion and Jazz elements to his compositions. His interest in Jazz has led him to collaborations with jazzman Don Cherry, amd bassist Dave Holland.
