At the age of 19 he became the youngest teacher ever at the Berklee College of Music, and twenty years later in 1996 he received an honorary doctorate.
Pat made his recording debut with pianist Paul Bley and legendary bassist Jaco Pastorius in 1974. Together they recorded album "Jaco" in 1974. Pat continued cooperation with Jaco Pastorius and recorded with him another notable album "Bright Size Life" with drummer Bob Moses in 1975.

In 1978 Pat met keyboardist Lyle Mays and in 1978 formed his Pat Metheny Group which originally featured Mays, bassist Mark Egan and drummer Dan Gottlieb. Within a short period he was ECM's top artist and one of the most popular of all jazz guitarists.
Over the years, Pat Metheny has won countless polls as "Best Jazz Guitarist" and awards, including three gold records for (Still Life) Talking, Letter from Home, and Secret Story. He has also won 18 Grammy Awards in different categories including Best Rock Instrumental, Best Contemporary Jazz Recording, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, Best Instrumental Composition. The Pat Metheny Group won an unprecedented seven consecutive Grammies for his seven consecutive albums.
He continues to be one of the brightest stars of the jazz community and one of the finest guitarist on jazz scene.
