Ottmar Liebert was born in Cologne, Germany,1959, to a Hungarian mother and Chinese-German father. He started to learn classical guitar at age eleven. Liebert spent some time in art school investigating his potential for a career in design or photography, but he ultimately found inspiration in the music during an extended excursion through Russia and Asia. After returning to Germany he worked with various blues and funk bands, then moved to the United States where he spent a decade of experimentation with pop, funk, jazz, and blues. After moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1985, his style evolved into a form of New Age fusion based largely in flamenco rhythms.
Ottmar founded an ensemble called Luna Negra, which has gained popularity performing as a touring band and recording music albums in a "Nouveau Flamenco" style. In the late 1990s, Liebert found new inspiration while on a family excursion in the scenic environs of Italy's Tuscan countryside.
Liebert also has accompanied other pop artists such as Diana Ross, Celine Dion and Kenny Loggins.
