Luiz Bonfa
Luiz Bonfá (October 17, 1922 – January 12, 2001) - virtuoso guitarist/composer from Rio de Janeiro. Bonfá took up the guitar at eleven and studied classical guitar with the Uruguayan master Isaias Savio. He began to work Rio's clubs as a singer with the Quitandinha Serenaders,
His songs recorded in the 1950s by Dick Farney attracted the attention of Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes which marked the beginning of a fruitful cooperation.
The turning point in Luiz career came in 1959 when film director Marcel Camus asked Bonfá to contribute some songs to his film version of the play"Black Orpheus" on the screen).
Main film's theme written by Bonfá "Manhã da Carnaval" gained world fame and is now among the most performed standards of all times.
Between 1956 and 1975 Bonfá traveled back and forth between Brazil and the USA. In both countries his musical career was received with increasing fame. In the USA he toured with singer Mary Martin and worked with musicians like George Benson, Quincy Jones, Deodato, Stan Getz and Frank Sinatra.

Luiz Bonfá died of cancer on January 12, 2001 in Rio de Janeiro.
