Kenny Burrell (Kenneth Earl Burrell, born July 31, 1931) began his musical career in Detroit while a student at Wayne State University. He was a well-established player on the Detroit jazz scene when he made his professional recording debut with Dizzy Gillespie on Tin Tin Daeo and Birk’s Works in 1951.
In 1956 Burrell moved to New York where he appeared on a countless number of records as a leader and as a sideman. Among his more notable associations were dates with Stan Getz, Billie Holiday, Milt Jackson, John Coltrane, Gil Evans, Sonny Rollins, Quincy Jones, Stanley Turrentine, and Jimmy Smith.
Burrell has recorded about 106 albums. Few of those most significant are Midnight Blue (1963), Blue Lights, Guitar Forms, Sunup To Sundown (1990), Soft Winds (1993), Then Along Came Kenny (1993), and Lotus Blossom (1995). Aside from his performing and recording schedule, Kenny has been a teacher at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) for many years.
