He has toured the world extensively as a recitalist and appeared as soloist with countless major orchestras.
Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1944 Barbosa-Lima began playing the guitar at the age of seven. This was famous jazz and bossa nova guitaist Luis Bonfa, who directed the young Carlos to the father of the classical guitar school of Brasil. He has studied with Isaias Savio, and the legendary Andres Segovia and recorded his first album when he was only twelve.
After moving to USA for many years Carlos lived in New York for a few years before settling in Puerto Rico.
As a guitar master, Barbosa-Lima been honored by many distinguished composers who have written landmark works dedicated specifically for him.
He has transcribed compositions by Scarlatti, Bach, Handel, and even Joplin and has successfully arranged works by Gershwin, Sondheim, Cole Porter and many Brazilian composers.
