Legendary veteran of jazz guitar, Pat Martino had been playing jazz guitar professionally for 19 years when he lost almost all memory of his family and his career after suffering a brain aneurysm in the 1970s. He was forced to re-learn how to play the guitar, studying his old recordings. By the early '90s, Martino had returned to the soul-jazz and became one of most important musicians in his genre and is often cited as "father of the modern jazz guitar." Martino has recorded 37 albums as bandleader and playing on many more as sideman. He has been nominated for Grammy awards several times and was voted "Guitar Player of the Year" in 2004 by readers of Down Beat magazine.
